LeMay Collection Tour and Regional Show and Shine - Aug 14-15, 2021
The Regional Show and Shine and LeMay Museum Tour (Aug 14-15) was a great weekend! The best part was acting “normal” again. Gathering with club members and club friends. Looking at the cars. BS’ing about cars. Just like old times. It was a well-deserved change after 1 ½ years of lockdown.
Seven Portland members met at the rest area on I-5 north of Vancouver (totaling 13 people). One of these was a newer member at his first club event. Another was a recent member at his second event. Plus, there were the “usual suspects” like Barry Corno, Byron Pace, Russ Erdman and me. It was an easy drive to LeMay Marymount and on schedule. We met about an equal number of Seattle section members, including Tony Andrews. Tony had made the arrangements and we had a docent tour of the grounds with commentary about the cars. It was a great tour. One of the funniest things was a DeLorean with its driver’s door open and a handwritten sign sitting in the driver’s seat. It said: “Marty. Whatever you do, don’t go back to 2020.” I had to agree with that.
After the tour (about 3 hours) a few Portland members went home. Barry, Byron, Peter Holman and I followed Tony Andrews to America’s Car Museum in downtown Tacoma. Tony had arranged for us to visit and have a docent tour of the museum – which turned out great. Our docent, Jim, had been at the museum for about 8 years and knew the histories and stories of the cars on display. He had a lot of background knowledge which made the visit more than just looking at cars. It was a great Saturday.
Sunday was the Show & Shine. They had about 45 cars signed up in advance. Tony expected about 50 but had been hoping to top 60. They ended up with 64 or 65 – which made the section leaders very pleased. Not the 84 or so from the 2019 show, but very welcome considering what happened in the last year and a half. Griot’s was very accommodating and a great venue – except it lacks trees which means no shade. That was the only complaint by members. At the end of the show Tony said they’d return there next year – albeit on a date that wouldn’t conflict with Legends.
